"FAST CAR" - SYD
Syd returns with an 80’s inspired single titled “Fast Car”. Her soothing vocals fit perfectly with this bass-heavy retro production. Not to mention, the guitar solo is a moment!
The music video shows Syd and her girlfriend in love, enjoying the day together in the desert. In a press release for “Fast Car”, Syd states: “I wanted to make something for the gay Black girls. I want them to see themselves in this and in me.” We’re grateful Syd blessed us with a stellar Black wlw summer song.
"TOO MUCH SUN IN LA" - MCCLENNEY & CHIKA
McClenney teams up with Chika to bring us an alternative R&B tune on fake relationships. Issa vibe, plain and simple. If you haven’t heard of McClenney, we need to change that now. He’s a singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, director, and photographer from Maryland, now based in Los Angeles.
Chika, of course, knocks her verse out of the park with her smooth flow and lyrical prowess. Also, gotta love a Virgil reference: “Keep it two virgils, give me a sign”. Her harmonies on the chorus
“Too much sun in LA” is McClenney’s second single this year. He just announced his 2nd studio album titled On A Virgo Mind will be out on August 13th. It’s his first album in almost 5 years. We’ll be sure to give his upcoming album our full attention.
"WHENEVER YOU'RE READY" - MAHALIA
Mahalia’s latest single is a banger. Period. “Whenever You’re Ready” perfectly samples “Get It On Tonite” by Montell Jordan and gives us that fun late 90s/00s vibe while still feeling fresh. The hook is infectious and will have you singing along. Mahalia is a star and this song just cemented that fact.
The music video is a must watch. The color palette alone is everything. We promise you, after watching the music video, you’ll want to learn the dance. Or at the very least, you’ll want to recreate some of these looks. Pigtails, fuzzy bucket hats, and all.
