TGI New Music Friday – July 2nd 2021
It’s the first Friday of July, so of course we gotta kick this month off right with some new music. You ready? Let’s jump right in.
"TOO MUCH (FEAT. KEYS OPEN DOORS)" - TALAYA.
Talaya. teams up with Keys Open Doors and producer 7KY (Sky Gienger) to create a dark, yet otherworldly soundscape. This alternative RnB track depicts the decay of a toxic relationship: “am I loving you too much / does it feel like a drug? / do you keep getting high pulling up all my love? / Well I’m done.”
The production may be killer; however, Talaya.’s soulful vocals are the true highlight on “Too Much”. Her harmonies on the chorus add to the auditory experience. Talaya. is set to release an album in the near future titled Existential Soul. She is definitely an artist to keep on your radar.
"GOOD GOOD" - TANERÉLLE
Mama Saturn returns and her latest track is “Good Good”, indeed. The song starts off with an intoxicating guitar riff and drum beat. Tanerélle’s effortless sultry vocals hook you in as soon as she sings the first line: “Say you want some lovin’, wanna feel lost? / Ooh, you know I got plenty”.
It’s one of those tracks that you can’t help but listen to again and again because of how captivating it is. If “Good Good” is the start of a new era, we can’t wait to see what Tanerélle has in store for us next.
"STARLIGHT" - YOLA
Yola’s “Starlight” is a soulful, retro-inspired track that showcases her powerhouse vocals. Yola explains that the song (and music video) is about “looking for positive physical, sexual and human connections at every level of your journey towards love. The world seems to attach a negative trope of cold heartlessness to the concept of any sexual connection that isn’t marriage, this song looks through a lens of warmth specifically when it comes to sex positivity.”
In the music video, we see the magnetism between Yola and her love interest and the way they long for each other. Yola also mentions how the depiction of dark skinned Black women having a nice normal time in healthy romantic situations is still lacking in today’s media. Truer words were never spoken.
This is the latest single off of her upcoming album, Stand For Myself, which is set to be released on July 30th. Make sure to pre-order it here.
